Dating Chemistry: What It Is and What It Isn't
People use “chemistry” to describe an easy, energized sense of connection. It can matter, but it is not a switch one person controls.
Chemistry is reciprocal
You can communicate warmly, listen and flirt, but another person retains their own preferences and boundaries. A useful model of chemistry therefore includes mutual participation.
Chemistry and compatibility are different
A strong spark does not automatically tell you whether values, goals, habits or relationship expectations fit. Likewise, a comfortable connection can sometimes grow without dramatic instant chemistry.
Look for participation, not a secret signal
Reciprocal questions, engaged conversation, voluntary closeness and enthusiasm can be encouraging, but no isolated behavior proves attraction. When a decision matters, clear communication beats decoding.
Avoid guaranteed-attraction claims
Advice that promises to make a particular person feel attraction regardless of what they want should be treated skeptically. Dating skills can improve communication; they cannot remove another person’s agency.
