ConversationHow to Keep a Conversation Going on a Date
Running out of things to say is normal. You do not need an endless script; you need a few ways to notice and develop what is already in the conversation.
Listen for nouns with stories behind them
Work, travel, siblings, music, food, neighborhoods and projects can all open branches. Pick the branch that seems to have energy rather than changing subjects immediately.
Add before you ask
Offer a thought, reaction or short story before another question. This prevents the conversation from becoming one-sided.
Let short pauses exist
A pause is not automatically failure. Take a sip, look around, or return to something interesting from earlier instead of rushing to fill every second.
Change mode when needed
If the conversation is flat, a walk, shared activity or change of setting can give both people fresh material.
